The story of Made in America? follows the individual reckoning of an art curator, who is presenting a modern art piece created by a friend from college— a brick. Though the art presentation— and the art itself— seems simple at first, the brick becomes a much more complicated story about the crumbling American Dream, in the wake of our country’s most recent racist policy changes and the ever exacerbated cracks in the system built to keep the underprivileged and underrepresented down.
Synchronicity’s Stripped Bare 2026
This show was first directed as an ensemble piece through Synchronicity Theatre’s Stripped Bare Fest, as a partially devised experiment to test the script’s flexibility and branch into its next direction. The ensemble members all played aspects of Andreas, the curator, sometimes speaking in unison and sometimes not, with the added complexity of becoming a rotating cast of concrete and abstract players popping up from Andreas’ past and in his imaginative storytelling. This approach loosened the structure while also guiding the audience through the text with dynamic group images. The story of Made in America? continues this March with a production at the Asheville Fringe Fest.
